voice of the movement for a balanced state-city identity at "San
Jose State", which was founded as the California State Normal
School (1862-1921) and is the school from which the entire CSU system
grew.

"San Jose State" Became
CSU, San Jose in 1972
CSU Still Grants San Jose degrees
What is now called "San Jose State" was the California
State University, San Jose (CSU, San Jose) for the institution's
first two years as a university (1972 to 1974). This was a modern
restoration of the school's original name: The California
State Normal School (1862-1921).
Despite a positive reception to this prestigious name and identity
by the University president and editorial writers at the Spartan
Daily, anti-California alumni declared war on the restoration
of the oldest CSU's original identity. The anti-CSU faction,
who evidentally despised the name of the state that established,
funded and maintained their school, launched a campaign to downgrade
the school back to the provinical "San Jose State"
identity.
Their first tactic was to ignore the school's real name to the
greatest extent possible. Also, they didn't allow students or
alumni to vote on keeping the school's CSU identity. Instead,
they went straight to the California Legislature where they
pushed through a bill to downgrade the school's identity back
to "San Jose State".
Despite this anti-California name change, degrees at the institution
are still granted by "The Trustees of the California State
University at San Jose."
Since 2003 students and alumni who are loyal to the State of
California and the CSU have been fighting to restore the rights
of San Jose grads to identify and market themselves as CSU graduates,
a right which requires the State University in San Jose to once
again publicly recognize its real identity: that of the oldest
California State University, established in 1862 as the California
State Normal School.
A growing number of Spartans believe that this more prestigious,
geographically expansive, and internationally recognizable identity
will better service San Jose graduates as they enter the competitive
job market in the Bay Area and elsewhere around the country,
and around the world.
