voice of the movement for a balanced state-city identity at "San
Jose State", which was founded as the California State Normal
School (1862-1921) and is the school from which the entire CSU system
grew.

Original Name Was Restored from 1972 to 1974
Degrees Are Still Granted by CSU
From 1972 to 1974, "San Jose State" was publicly known
as "California State University, San Jose," the modern
version of its original name: The California State Normal School
(1862-1921). On the day this historic restoration of the school's
original name took effect, the Spartan Daily published a supportive
editorial. Later in the year Spartan Shops published an ad saying
"SJSU Doesn't Exist" encouraging students to buy CSU
gear.
Despite this positive reception, anti-CSU alumni in San Jose
declared war on CSU San Jose and public use of this name was
destroyed by 1974. Nevertheless, degrees at the institution
are still granted by "The Trustees of the California State
University at San Jose."
Since 2003 a dedicated group of students and alumni who are
loyal to the State of California and the CSU have been fighting
to restore the rights of San Jose grads to identify themselves
as CSU graduates, a right which requires the State University
in San Jose to once again publicly recognize its real identity:
that of the oldest California State University.
A growing number of Spartans believe that this more prestigious,
geographically expansive, and internationally recognizable identity
will better serve San Jose graduates as they enter the competitive
job market in the Bay Area and elsewhere around the country,
and around the world.
