CSU Students Denied Rights OSU & LSU Take for Granted
A California State University Critical Response Unit Trailer at San Jose State. SAN JOSE, CA - (Jan. 1, 2008) - The 2007-2008 college football bowl season showcased the national appeal of powerful state identity schools like LSU and Ohio State. Now students and alumni at the oldest California State University (CSU) campus (aka San Jose State) are planning to secure the same rights enjoyed by OSU Buckeyes and LSU Tigers.
The success and notoriety of National Championship contenders like Ohio State and Louisiana State, powered in great part by their name association with well-known and respected U.S. States, benefits their students and alumni, making their educational experience more marketable in a competitive job market.
In stark contrast, students and alumni in the entire California State University (CSU) system remain bereft of a powerful campus-based CSU identity that could help bring recognition and notoriety to CSU all campuses. Only the bureaucrats at the CSU Chancellor's office are permitted to identify with the CSU and purchase apparel and gear that should be available to students and alumni. |

Students Sour on SJSU Spartan Football "Hype"
Despite the CSU's contributions to San Jose State, Spartans are forbidden from identifying with the CSU. SAN JOSE, CA - An ESPN TV announcer twice recently mistakenly identified San Jose State as "San Diego State" during a televison broadcast without being corrected by his fellow broadcasters, according to an Oct. 31 story in the Spartan Daily.
The focus of the story was about San Jose State students who have become dissatisfied with the SJSU Spartan Football "hype". The article also addresses the issue of the obscurity of SJSU's identity and the debate among San Jose State supporters on how to make the school better known.
These events provide fuel to the argument that San Jose State's identity is not strong enough the serve the interests of its students and graduates. In March 2007, one in four San Jose State students voted in an official Student Initiative to restore a the California State University (CSU) identity at the school, which is the founding campus of the CSU system.
In total, 606 current SJSU students voted for the CSU Identity Intiative. This was despite the effort by certain SJSU officials to first derrail then defeat the student-sponsored measure.
